Introduction – مُقَدِّمَةٌ
- In Part 1 of Lesson 2 we learn the noun ذَلِكَ which means ‘That’ (called a demonstrative pronoun in grammar). /dhālika/ is used to refer to objects that are further away whereas /hādhā/ is used to refer to objects that are closer.

ذَلِكَ نَجْمٌ. That is a star. |
مَا ذَلِكَ؟ What is That? |

|
هَـٰذَا مَسْجِدٌ وَذلِكَ بَيْتٌ. This is a mosque and that is a house. |
مَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا ذَلِكَ؟ What is this and what is that? |

|
هَـٰذَا حِصَانٌ وَذلِكَ حِمارٌ. This is a horse and that is a donkey. |
مَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا ذَلِكَ؟ What is this and what is that? |

|
لا، ذَلِكَ قِطٌٌ. No, that is a cat. |
أَذَلِكَ كَلْبٌ؟ Is that a dog? |
|
|
ذَلِكَ سَرِيرٌ. That is a bed. |
مَا ذَلِكَ؟ What is That? |
|
|
هَـٰذَا مُدَرَّسٌ وَذَلِكَ إِِمَامٌ. This is a teacher and that is an imam. |
مَنْ هَـٰذَا وَمَنْ ذَلِكَ؟ Who is this and who is that? |
